11:22 PM @eid_yara This is Remas. Today Remas turned 13. She’s is the baby sister I’ve always dreamt of having. It’s a long story but she has been living with us for the past 3 years and I’ve known her since she was born. Yesterday was the first time I talked to Remas since the beginning of the aggression. Remas went to visit her biological family who she loves dearly before the aggression started. I tried calling her every day but she had no connection and no internet as she and her family are seeking shelter in an UNRWA School after their house was destroyed. I heard her voice and she started crying because she missed me so much, she was worried sick about me after hearing that most of my immediate family were killed who she knew and loved. She also had a beautiful friendship with Ibrahim my best friend who was also killed. I check up on her telling her that she is strong and loved and we all miss her. Then I wish her happy early birthday. She was so excited to turn 13! Remas tells me with all of the innocence in the world that she is not celebrating nor accepting any birthday wishes. She’s decided that she will change her birthday. She tells me I don’t like October anymore. My birthday is next month instead. I choke on my silence and helplessness. I shed a few tears and I try to make her laugh and I try to tell her about all the things we’re going to do once this aggression is over. She tells me the situation is very bad. I miss our house. I miss going out with you and mama. I miss our nights and trips to the beach. She then says I’m so sorry if I ever told you I was bored or unhappy, I took our life for granted. More than 3500 angles have been killed in three weeks. But there is still 1 million children in Gaza who will grow up with trauma, fear and so much pain. I am crying not for those who have been killed but for those who are still alive. Remas lived through 5 aggressions. She grew up in fear every single day. As her older sister, I think about how will she cope with all of this trauma? How will she go back to living if she even makes it alive? There are 1 million children that will be scarred forever. I cry for my sister and I cry for all of the children of Palestine.
